Abandoned meltwater channel

Location: Near Aktineq Glacier (B17), Bylot Island, Nunavut, Canada
Shilts image - Abandoned meltwater channel

This meltwater channel was cut in bedrock, probably during a mid-Wisconsin expansion of Aktineq Glacier. Channel sides are probably modified by over 50,000 years of talus development under extreme freeze-thaw conditions. High-grade crystalline metamorphic bedrock underlies the channel sides. This is one of the lower channels depicted in the aerial view of image 0012, directly above our campsite.
