Terraced mudboils

Location: Northwest arm of Kaminak Lake, Nunavut, Canada; 62° 17.5' N, 95° 31' W
Terraced mudboils

Sediment extruded from mudboils on slopes often assumes this terraced form, with downslope movement of mud from one mudboil impinging on or overriding whatever is down slope, in this case another mudboil. Image 0222 shows a recently formed, similar mudboil terrace with freshly extruded mud enclosing live vegetation. It is located near the example in this image and will form a similar vegetated, terraced surface after the extrusion process is terminated. Length of the knife is 2.5 cm. The steep mudflow fronts face down slope (toward the right of the image). See detailed discussion for image 0240.
