Close-up of recessional moraines, kettles, and meltwater channels
Location:
Bylot
Island, Nunavut, Canada
Close-up of recessional moraines, kettles, and meltwater channels on the west side of the snout area of Sirmilik Glacier (B37). The view is south toward Eclipse Sound. Note the lateral meltwater channel cut through unconsolidated sediments in the terrace on the right. In the 1940s, this glacier was tidal and extended out to the present location of that active channel. Image 0035 is of the same retreat sequence on the east side of Sirmilik's snout.
