Frozen basal sediment and glacier ice

Location: Bylot Island, Nunavut, Canada
Frozen basal sediment and glacier ice

Frozen basal sediment and glacier ice exposed in the side of a meltwater channel by erosion in the snout area of Aktineq Glacier (B17). This is the debris-rich base of Aktineq Glacier preserved by the insulating effect of debris melted out on the surface. If undisturbed by meltwater, this sediment would retain some of these structures in the form of basal melt-out till once climatic conditions warmed enough to thaw the interstitial and interbedded ice.
